The Look: So L.A.
By TheStyleEditor | June 14, 2007
Note from the Editor: I had to run to Sherman Oaks recently to pick up an order of contact lenses from my optometrist, and then headed over to the Fashion Square mall to return something at Gap. I got there and realized that I was having a total Los Angeles fashion moment: I was sporting Gap jeans, a T-shirt, stylish flip flops and an expensive designer handbag (Furla’s Yolande pleated shopper in Taupe, which I have to say is one of my favorite purchases this year). The typical L.A. uniform.
So, I thought I would pull together a couple of looks in this vein. Comfy casual, with the status-symbol purse—it’s so L.A.
LOOK 1

Start with a tunic-y T-shirt like this one from Forever 21. Come in a crinkly gold foil on a white background. And, you can’t beat the price! Pair it up with the official garment of L.A.–a pair of jeans. When it comes to jeans, Los Angelenos take theirs very seriously. For classic fit and styling, why not go straight to the original source? You can’t go wrong with a pair of Levi’s skinny jeans in a dark wash—and these have a high-rise waist, so you don’t have to worry about your rear end hanging out. Add some upscale, no brainer flipflops to make it look like you weren’t trying too hard. Don’t forget to add a little bling to the whole ensemb’—try these chunky, princess cut “diamonds” from Claire’s. And of course, you have to round out the outfit with the most posh and expensive handbag you can afford. How about this break-the-bank splurge in cherry from Marc Jacobs? Quilted calfskin and hand-stiched ruching, complemented by gold-tone hardware. Ridiculous price, perhaps—but don’t you want some respect at the mall?

LOOK 2

Palmer Cash carries some seriously fun (and funny) T-shirts. This one is perfect for your L.A. look! Look 2 features my favorite jeans: Gap’s Long and Lean style. I’m apparently not the only one who loves them, because Gap’s website says that this is their best-selling style. These are great for tall girls because the long sizes are actually carried in the store—there’s no need for special ordering to get the right fit. Try this crosshatch rinsed color for a slimming, more trouser-like look. Keep it simple with suede flip flops, also from Gap. They come in chocolate brown and black. Easy gold hoops in anantiqued finish polish up the outfit without any overexertion. Now you just have to find the perfect bag. Here’s one of the things I love about expensive bags—they’re styled to look beat up and worn, like you’ve loved them for years. This bag from Bulga is a great example. Slightly distressed brown leather brought to you in floppy perfection, complete with fringe and gold-toned hardware.
