    Life/Style: Money Can’t Buy Style

    By TheStyleEditor | June 20, 2007

My hubby and I were out this past weekend at The Grove in Los Angeles, an upscale outdoor mall that happens to be right around the corner from our home. It is popular with locals because it is a beautiful shopping center, adjacent to our famous Farmer’s Market, and has a movie theater, many nice restaurants and plenty of luxe shopping options. Additionally, the people watching there can’t be beat. You have a mix of celebs, locals and tourists, mixing and mingling along the boulevard or watching the fabulous dancing fountain show.

The Grove is also a great place to see L.A. in all its glory: the quintessential California casual looks of thrown-together yet glamourous girls; the Beverly Hills ladies who lunch, with their carefully painted makeup, giant sunglasses, and tiny dogs in tow; young girls wearing not one trend, but all of them at once. It is definitely a fun fashion feast for the eyes.

Watching the girls go by this past weekend, I noticed a classic style tenet in action. The idea? That money can’t buy style. Designer brands are nice, but do not the fashionista make. I’m not the first to have this thought, but I did smile as I witnessed it at The Grove.

The offender? A girl, maybe 19 years old, toting around a gorgeous Chanel Cambon Reporter in bubble gum pink. Nothing wrong with that, the Reporter is a knockout bag. And it wasn’t the fact that such a young woman was carrying such an expensive bag, which runs easily over $1,000. I live in L.A.; that kind of excess is de rigeuer here.

The fashion crime? Matching the pretty pink Reporter with a pair of screaming red leggings. Ack.
