Beauty: L’Oreal Guilty of Racism in France
By TheBeautyEditor | July 18, 2007
A French court found cosmetics giant L’Oreal guilty of racism last week due to its use of only white women to promote its Garnier shampoo.
Now, civil rights groups are pressuring two of my all-time favorite movie stars, Kate Winslet and Clive Owen, to step down from their spokesperson positions on principle. I’ve loved Kate Winslet since Sense and Sensibility, she of the alabaster skin and trembling lip, calling out after her lost love: “Willoughby. Willoughby.” And I loved him in Croupier (a discussion of which at a car wash one day inspired my best friend and I to pack the newly washed car and hit the road to Vegas on the spur of the moment), but my very favorite Clive Owen film is Gosford Park. What is hotter than his simmering and angry (yet ready to pounce on the girl) Robert Parks? Yes, yes, like what you’ve done there, yes . . .

So back to L’Oreal. Kate has been known to stand her ground when she feels passionate about a subject, pursuing a libel suit against Grazia magazine after it ran an article claiming she ran to a diet specialist to trim down despite being a vociferous advocate for healthy female body images. Clive just recently started his stint as the face of Lancome’s men’s line (and I have to say, I’m a little torn–hand one, love Clive Owen’s handsome face; hand two, don’t know if I want to see it on a billboard hawking cologne). But will the Garnier gaffe be enough for them to sever ties?

What do you think? Should Kate and Clive tell L’Oreal to shove their high-dollar contracts?
