Life/Style: Hairspray the Movie
By TheStyleEditor | July 22, 2007
Nothing like finishing your grad school semester to make you go crazy and go on a three-movie spree bender. My daughter wanted to see Hairspray, and so we started the day with that flick.
Let me preface this by saying I am a musical theater person. I know all of the music and lyrics to all of the classics and most of the modern blockbusters (Miss Saigon being one of my all-time favorites). I was actually in New York City some years back and found myself standing next to some theater-goers on a subway platform. They had Miss Saigon playbills in their hands, which warmed my heart. Until I heard the woman say, “I don’t know. It just seemed like a Madame Butterfly ripoff.” Which was like calling West Side Story a Romeo and Juliet ripoff, because both musicals were based on both plays. So much for a cultured audience.
I am also a huge fan of Stephen Sondheim and cannnot wait for Sweeney Todd to come out on January 8, 2008–and what’s the mystery there?

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter along with Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin? Come on! That is going to rock! I’ve been secretly in love with Alan Rickman since Sense and Sensibility, with his quietly tortured Colonel Brandon. (Or maybe it was his icy, controlling terrorist Hans Gruber in Die Hard. One or the other.) But back to Sweeney. Just to make it even more fun for theater fans, Sacha Baron Cohen is on board as Adolfo Pirelli. I have all the Ali G. shows on DVD (How great is the veteran/veterinarian bit?) and have even watched the Ali G. movie. Several times.
So, Hairspray . . .
I was a little ambivalent about Hairspray. I never got in on the ground floor when it first came out, never caught the show when it rolled into Los Angeles. And given my antipathy for the last movie musical I saw (sorry, Dreamgirls), I was a bit whatever about the whole thing. But then when my daughter wanted to see it, I thought okay, this will be fun for her.
Well, it was just fun, period. From the opening sequence, where you fall in love with Nikki Blonsky’s eternally optimistic Tracy Turnblad, to the end, where each major character has miraculously been given a relatively believable growth arc. (Crazy!) And I hate to even say it, because I’m not in the same demographic anymore, but Zac Efron really is impossibly dreamy. Like to the point where it’s funny.

I almost walked right over and bought the soundtrack at Barnes and Noble except for a paralyzing fear that someone would scream out the ending of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows immediately upon entering the book store. Thank goodness for iTunes.
And, the movie had really fun fashions with those Jackie Kennedy shapes. Some of which are totally in right now! Check it:
